Hi, I'm Kelsey!
What I do...
I HELP WOMEN GET TO THE ROOT CAUSE OF WHY THEY DON’T FEEL WELL. TOGETHER WE EXAMINE EATING AND LIFESTYLE HABITS AND FIND FOODS AND BEHAVIORS THAT MAKE YOU THRIVE.
Where I work...
I work with clients virtually throughout the state of Michigan and also offer home visits in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
That we are all unique individuals with different nutritional and emotional needs. I practice n=1 nutrition. It doesn’t really matter what works for your best friend or your neighbor's cousin Kathy - YOU are the only test subject that matters.
That calories should be enjoyed, not counted. If you are looking for a calorie counting meal plan, I’m not your gal. We will work on ramping up your cooking skills and get you to eat more whole foods.
That self-care is critical for optimal functioning. I will help you discover that elusive “me time.”
That maintaining a healthy relationship with food is critical. There is a difference between eliminating a food from your diet because it makes you feel bad vs. eliminating it due to food fear or the latest diet craze you are reading about. How you feel about what you eat is just as important as what you eat.
You are busy, I’m busy. I don’t think either of us is here to waste time. Heck-you’ve already wasted enough time not feeling up to par, so let’s change that! I am here to provide you with practical solutions that will fit into your busy schedule.
Our work together will be relatioship based. I will be open and honest with you about what you need to do to succeed and expect the same from you. I will be there to help encourage and support you through bumps and turns along the way.
Let’s be real, that’s why we are all here right? Food can be healing, but it can also be your worst enemy. My job is to help you find which foods and lifestyle activities make you feel best, all while maintaining a healthy relationship with food.
More about Kelsey...
I became interested in functional medicine and nutrition more out of necessity than by choice. Although if I had known about this method of healing earlier in my career I would have gladly jumped in sooner.
After going through 1 year of fertility treatment, ultimately IVF, 5 months of morning sickness while taking a crappy dye-filled prenatal gummy and not gaining hardly any weight, breastfeeding for over a year, and then not sleeping for 15-months after my daughter was born, my body began to fall apart. In the year postpartum I began developing all sorts of seemingly unrelated symptoms - things like numbness/tingling, itchy skin, joint pain, facial rashes, among other things. You name the symptom, I probably had it! I went to several different healthcare practitioners and everything always checked out normal. Every time they told me “your labs are normal,” all I could think is “but something isn’t right!.” As you could probably guess, not getting answers simply fueled more anxiety, ultimately making my symptoms worse.
The thing is, nobody really sat down to listen to my story to try to piece together the puzzle. When you sit down to really think, it makes sense that my body was falling apart. I went through huge periods of stress while undergoing fertility treatments and then I was no oasis of calm while carrying my daughter either-always worried about what might happen. My body was then severely depleted of nutrients due to the nausea and vomiting, inadequate food intake, and the poor quality prenatal vitamin I was taking. Add breastfeeding for over a year and not sleeping on top of that and it was the perfect storm for my body to start showing signs of inflammation.
Simply by coming to terms with the fact that my body had been through a lot and starting to work on optimizing my gut (where 70% of your immune system lies), eating more whole foods (including more healthy fats), adding in some high quality supplements (and ditching the crappy ones I had been taking), and practicing more self care and stress reduction, I was able to calm most of my symptoms over a period of several months.
My goal is to help YOU piece together YOUR puzzle and get you feeling awesome again.
On a lighter note, I live in Grand Rapids with my husband Justin, 2-year-old daughter Blair, and 2 cats (Quinn and Ninja). When I’m not studying up on nutrition you can find me cooking, working on my food photography, watching Michigan State sports, or taking a Pure Barre class. I don’t get out as much anymore but I love hitting up the many farm-to-table restaurants we have in Grand Rapids whenever I get the chance.
